Apple launches all-new AirPods with Spatial audio, wireless charging and 6 hours of battery life

Apple has introduced a range of audio devices at its Unleashed event, including the much-awaited new generation of AirPods. The new True-Wireless-Stereo speakers from Apple come with a range of upgrades over the previous iteration, including MagSafe and wireless charging. Here is a look at all that is new for audiophiles from the house of Apple.

Apple AirPods

The all-new AirPods come as the third-generation of the wireless earphones from Apple. Interestingly, the company has deviated the design of the new-gen AirPods from the original lineup and has instead gone for an AirPods Pro like look this time. This means shorter stems and more in-ear design, sans the ear tips.

There are several upgrades on offer too. For instance, the new AirPods support spatial audio and are sweat and water resistant. Apple also promises an improved battery life, claiming a playback time of up to six hours and up to four hours of talk time on a single charge. Five minutes of charge can give you an hour of use on the new AirPods. The case can provide four full charges and supports MagSafe charging and wireless charging too.

The new AirPods come with a custom driver and a high dynamic range amplifier for optimum audio quality. They are also equipped with adaptive EQ that tunes sound in real-time based on how AirPods fit in the user’s ear. There is spatial audio support with dynamic head tracking to provide a three-dimensional theatre-like experience.

For calls, there is an acoustic mesh covering the microphone to help reduce the sound of wind, so the speaker’s voice comes across distinctly on calls. AirPods also feature AAC-ELD, a speech codec that offers full HD voice quality.

AirPods (3rd generation) will be available for Rs 18,500 in India and will be up for orders from the Apple online store starting today. Availability in stores will start from Tuesday, October 26. With the launch of the new AirPods, the AirPods (2nd generation) will now be available at a new price of Rs 12,900.

HomePod mini

HomePod mini

Alongside the AirPods 3, Apple has launched the new HomePod mini. Equipped with the Apple S5 chip, the new smart speakers by the tech major run advanced software and complex tuning models to optimise audio output in real-time. Apple says that you can even place two HomePod mini speakers in the same room to create a stereo pair for an immersive experience.

For voice commands, the HomePod mini comes with a three-microphone array and a fourth inward-facing microphone to help cancel out sound coming from the speaker while a voice command is given to it. HomePod mini is designed to work with Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, radio stations and popular music services like Pandora, Deezer, and others.

As for other functions, Siri on HomePod mini can recognise voices of up to six different household members. It can then tailor music and podcasts to their preferences, and respond to personal requests, like reading their messages, reminders, notes, and calendar appointments, or making and answering phone calls. Users can even send an Intercom message from one HomePod mini to a connected Apple device and vice-versa.

Other important features added to the new HomePod mini include more voice options for Siri, time specific control for smart home devices and support for Find My to locate a misplaced iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, Apple Watch, or AirTag. HomePod mini will now even let users to interact with Apple TV through voice commands, while it can be paired to the Apple TV for sound output too.

HomePod mini will be available in yellow, orange, and blue, in addition to white and space grey, for a price of Rs 9,900. The smart speakers will retail starting November from Apple online store and through Apple Authorised Resellers.
